Set up your first JoltSMS number

This guide walks you from zero → a working JoltSMS number with notifications flowing to your tools.

What you'll need

  • A JoltSMS account (owner or manager role)
  • A payment method (card) to rent a dedicated number
  • (Optional) Slack/Discord/webhook endpoints if you want alerts outside the dashboard
1

Rent a dedicated number

  1. Go to Numbers → Rent Number.
  2. Choose the fastest option (Any U.S. area code) or pick a specific area code (beta).
  3. Click Continue to add a payment method.
  4. Review the summary and complete checkout. Your number is provisioned instantly.

Tip: You can cancel anytime; rental renews every 30 days.

2

Find your new number

After provisioning, your number appears on the Numbers page with status Active. You'll see unread counts, tags, and renewal date.

Good to know: Click the copy icon next to the number to paste it into signup forms you want to verify.

(Optional) Invite your team

If others need to view messages or manage routing, add them with the right role.

  1. Open Numbers → [Your Number] → Team Access.
  2. Click Invite Member and choose a role:

Set where notifications should go

By default, all new SMS appear in your Inbox. To also receive alerts in your tools, add endpoints and rules.

4A. Add endpoints (Slack, Discord, Email, Webhook)

  1. Go to Notifications → Add Endpoint.
  2. Pick Slack, Discord, Email, or Webhook and follow the prompts.
  3. Endpoints created here become available for account-wide defaults and per-number rules.

Webhook format: JoltSMS sends a JSON payload containing timestamp, number, sender, message text, and metadata. Make sure your receiver returns 2xx.

4B. Choose account-wide defaults

On the Notifications page, under Account-Wide Defaults, add endpoints for:

  • SMS Received
  • Number Expiring
  • Billing Issues

These apply to all numbers unless a specific number overrides them.

4C. (Optional) Override routing for a specific number

  1. From Numbers, open your number → Notification Settings.
  2. Toggle Custom Notification Rules: Active.
  3. For SMS Received, attach the endpoints (Slack/Discord/Email/Webhook) you want for this number.

Note: Custom rules override account defaults for that number only.

5

Receive a test OTP

Trigger a verification flow (e.g., sign in to a service that sends SMS codes) using your JoltSMS number.

  • The message appears in the Inbox in real time.
  • If you added endpoints, you'll also see alerts in Slack/Discord/Email/Webhooks.

How to tell it's working

  • Numbers page shows your number as Active.
  • Inbox updates with each SMS.
  • Notifications shows last delivery status (green Active with timestamps).
  • Your Slack/Discord channel or webhook receiver is receiving events.

Troubleshooting

No SMS in Inbox?

Make sure you used the exact rented number, including country code. Some services block VoIP; JoltSMS uses long-term, real-SIM numbers designed to work where VoIP fails—try again or another service if the sender rate-limits.

No Slack/Discord alerts?

Check the endpoint appears under Notifications, and that it's added to Account-Wide Defaults or your number's Custom rules. Verify the webhook URL is active and not firewalled.

Teammate can't manage rules?

Ensure their role is Manager (or Owner) on Team Access for that number.

Too many pings?

Remove endpoints from account-wide defaults and keep per-number custom rules for fine-grained control.

What's next?

  • Set tags and notes for each number (from the Numbers list) to keep things organized.
  • Create notification rules for Number Expiring so you never lose an important number.
  • Explore advanced routing with webhooks (e.g., forward OTPs into your internal tooling).
